Speed and torque are the most important performance indicators of a rotary driven machine. In contrast to speed measurement, torque measurement is no easy task. Strain gauges are the most widespread and well-known technique for torque measurement. They are accurate and extremely suitable for torque measurements in test setups or prototypes. However, as a technology for a low-cost torque sensor in standard products, they are too expensive and too difficult to install.
Force meters which can be integrated as a mechatronic component in an intelligent machine must be universally applicable, high-performance and robust, yet affordable to be used as standard equipment.
Principles of torque measurement
Given the difficulties involved, torque measurement has been approached from many new angles over the last two decades. The applied measurement principles can be divided into three main categories: – direct methods measure the strain or the angular displacement of the shaft directly; – indirect methods measure a property of the shaft or a property of a medium around the shaft; – methods that measure system parameters that allow us – provided we have prior knowledge of the system – to quantify the torque.
