Weight = strength
The weight (=force) of an object is often confused with the mass of the object. This is because a scale displays the mass in kg via a scaling in which the acceleration due to gravity is taken into account. The indicated mass is only correct at the place where the value for the acceleration due to gravity used for the scaling applies. This problem does not occur with balances that use a mass piece.
Calibrating a weighing platform
If you buy a weighing platform, it must also function properly. You must be able to assume that the scale indicates the correct weight. Calibrating a scale is checking and (if necessary) readjusting the scale. The accuracy of the scale is determined using calibration weights, so that a scale meets the specifications again after calibration. Calibrating a scale is done on the basis of the Metrology Act (formerly the Weights and Measures Act).
For the legal calibration of a scale, an external party can be used to guarantee a fair calibration. Nowadays, a scale supplier may also perform the calibration themselves without the intervention of another party. The scale supplier is periodically checked by Verispect. After the calibration, the scale is provided with a sticker, indicating that the scale complies with the legal standards.
Calibrating a weighing platform
Calibrating a scale is almost identical to the definition of calibration. However, when one speaks of calibrating a scale, it does not necessarily mean that the scale is also provided with the necessary sticker to indicate that it weighs according to the legal standards. Calibrating a scale is checking a scale using calibration weights and determining any deviation. When calibrating a scale, no calibration sticker is issued, which means that the scale is not labelled as legally calibrated. Calibration, including a calibration report, can be sufficient for, for example, the periodic (ISO) inspection.

Hospitals and healthcare institutions therefore work with calibrated scales certified for medical class 3. These scales can be recognized by two markings, namely a green square with the letter M, and next to it an oval circle with three vertical lines. These markings can be found on the manufacturer's manufacturing sticker. Class 3 scales must be calibrated and/or verified annually by a recognized supplier.
After calibration and verification, the scale is provided with a seal that must not be broken. Many cheap medical scales are difficult to calibrate or verify in the long term due to the quality of the load cells that are inside.
