Resistor in parallel or in series?

Resistance is the property of a component, such as a resistor, that limits the flow of current. Energy is used when the voltage across the component allows the current to flow. This excess energy is converted into heat that the component then radiates. Resistance is expressed in ohms, the symbol for ohm is omega  sign.

is a very small value for electronics and therefore resistor values are often given in kand M.
1 k = 1.000     1 M = 1.000.000 .Resistors used in electronics can have values as low as 0.1  and as high as 10 M.

Resistors connected in series

When resistors are connected in series, you can add the two values together to arrive at the total resistance value. For example, if resistors R1 and R2 are connected in series as shown in the figure, the combined value is R. The resistance, R, in this case is calculated as follows: Combined resistance in series: R = R1 + R2 This method can be extended infinitely with more resistors: R = R1 + R2 + R3 + R4 + … etc. Remember that combined resistors in series always have a resistance value that is higher than any individual resistor used.

Resistors connected in parallel

When resistors are connected in parallel, the combined resistance value is lower than that of the individual resistors used. There is a special equation to determine the combined resistance value of two parallel-connected resistors, R1 and R2.

If more than two resistors are used in parallel then a more complicated equation is required.

However, the simple equation for two resistors in parallel is much easier to use! Remember that the combined resistance value for resistors in parallel will always be lower than that of each individual resistor used.
